Our world today is more conscious of things like the environment and our impact on it: our carbon footprint. Companies have taken note of this change in our beliefs and actions, trying to appeal to these new conscious thoughts. For example, Motorola Cell Phones who are distributed via Verizon Cell Phones, have come out with a new eco-friendly phone. Motorola Cell Phones new W233 is that phone.
The new W233 by Motorola Cell Phones is a device made entirely of recycled plastic bottles. This is sure to rub hippies and green thinkers the right way. But the company who is distributed through Verizon cell phones has gone a step further. They plan to offset the carbon dioxide used in manufacturing, distributing and operating the phones by placing large investments in renewable energy sources and reforestation. While they don’t detail amounts or where the investments will be placed the idea alone sounds mildly revolutionary.
The idea to make a phone out of recycled plastic bottles is just all right in and of itself. But to have the understanding that it takes more than just recycled bottles is great for such a large company. I am of course talking about the offsetting of their carbon production. It seems so fake to just make a product from recycled materials and make the company out to be heroes. But when it is understood that a lot more goes into than the product itself, that the energy that goes into getting that product to the people is a problem alone, that shows real wisdom.
Yes Motorola cell phones seems to be going the extra mile to feel green. And if you wanted to be taken seriously through green eyes then you the extra miles is just about the only way to go about. Not only is it a smart marketing scheme to crack into a new niche or demographic but it actually does benefit the world. Even those who are not buying the phone benefit and that’s the beauty.
See when someone buys product A or product B but I don’t I still have to live with what it took to get those products to that person. But Motorola Cell Phones, available from Verizon Cell Phones, has made it so everybody. And yes, they win too, but that’s ok. After all they are a company and they deserve a share of the earnings, it’s the fact that they thought about everyone else that makes the difference.

Sony Ericsson Cell Phones is set to release their newest phone and really a first of its kind. It is a smart phone with a green conscious. From solar-power to less toxicity, here are the best eco-friendly mobiles.
Very few of us can live without a mobile device that keeps us connected while on the go, but our cell phones and PDAs contribute to toxic waste and lost resources, especially at the rate with which we upgrade. You can do your part by choosing a greener cell phone the next time you’re looking to trade-up.
1. Sticky phone
A concept design by Liu Hsiang-Ling integrates solar power cells into mobile phones in a simple, elegant design. Though many are concerned that they can’t leave their phones charging in the sun for several hours (can’t be without my phone), this new design (which can be found on Yanko Design) tries to work through that problem by incorporating a suction system for easy charging.
Simply peel back the protective cover from a sticky surface and then stick the phone to a nearby window getting full sun.
2. Samsung’s New Blue Earth Phone
Already available in the UK, Samsung’s Blue Earth Phone is another take on the solar-powered mobile phone. It is a touch screen smart phone that can generate its own power with a built-in solar panel on the back.
What makes this mobile device even more green is that it is made from post-consumer recycled content—PCM, which is a plastic made from recycled water bottles [recycling programs].
Additionally, it has a super efficient charger (where traditionally you lose a lot of wasted energy), and is made without toxic chemicals like phthalates, brominated flame retardants (BFR), and beryllium, to name a few. Plus, it’s delivered in recycled packaging, too.
3. LG Pop GD510
LG is another company that has recently launched a cell phone with solar cells embedded in the actual phone. A slim-line phone with simple, sleek design features, the LG POP (LG GD510), can capture enough energy for 2.25 minutes of talk time in about 10 minutes of charge-time. And like the other green phones mentioned here, it comes with additional eco-friendly features.
These include the fact that it is PVC-free and made without BFR. And it has a feature that will notify you when the phone is fully charged so that you can unplug the charger to save additional energy. It was released in Europe during the fourth quarter last year and should be available in other regions soon.
4. GreenHeart by Sony Ericsson
With some of the greenest features of any cell phones on the market, Sony’s two new options—the Elm and the Hazel—are being billed as devices that go above most other green phones out there. Part of their GreenHeart project which aims to integrate environmental advances across Sony Ericsson’s entire product lines, these phones are loaded with eco-friendly features.
Both are constructed in part of recycled plastic and are made without toxic chemicals commonly found in electronics. And both come with energy-efficient chargers to cut back on phantom energy losses. Additionally, they’re packaged in minimal packaging and use eco-friendly paints. [electronics recycling].
Both phones also some with the Walk Mate feature which helps the user find a walking route to where they need to go so that they can leave the car behind.
The aim is to encourage phone users to walk more than they drive. The Walk Mate even calculates how much carbon dioxide is saved by using this more eco-friendly method of transportation. These phones are slated to be available during the second quarter of 2010.

No, I’m not talking about LG’s green-hued Mint Chocolate phone (although, if I were in the market for a new Chocolate, the green Mint would be my preference). What I’m actually referring to is a new type of technology that the wireless industry is testing out that will use alternate energy to power cell phones. Cell companies have “heard the call” of millions ofgreen energy advocates and, in response, have begun working on ways to change the methods they have had in place for years.
There is a variety of ways that the cellular industry can utilize in place of their current mode of providing this convenience to its users. They are realizing that cell phone towers may have the ability to be powered by wind turbines. For those who don’t know, turbines are any of various machines in which the kinetic energy of a moving fluid, such as water, steam, or gas, is converted to rotary motion.
These same cell towers could also be operated through the use of solar panels, making use of the energy of the sun to power up the cell phones. Antennas could also receive their back up energy from hydrogen fuel cells and computer equipment could be cooled through geothermal methods.
The wireless industry has come to realize, whether through their own conscience or through the voices of millions who care about the earth’s current deterioration and eventual demise, all of the negative effects that its current methodology has had on environmental factors, and they seem to have a desire to alter their techniques in order to do their part to improve the condition of our world. However, my skepticism prevails, and it almost seems as if their concerns still reside more so in what impact this alteration with have financially. In other words, if this will save them money, they are more interested in attempting it.
The ideas that they have for this change over are still in the experimental phase, meaning it could take many years for this critical plan to be brought to fruition. To be fair, it should be noted that Sprint Nextel has been testing alternate energy sources for their cellular power since 2004, already using hydrogen fuel cells at 65,000 of its sites. In addition to this, Sprint has already been making use of many of the above mentioned alternates. T-Mobile is also attempting the application of some alternatives. T-Mobile’s director of national operations planning mentioned tax incentives that are given to companies from states when using alternate energy resources.
The idea of “green” wireless technology is one step closer to attaining a more livable earth. Not only is there a certain amount of radiation that is emitted from the cell phone antenna, the electricity being used to operate cell phone towers is immense. Because the electricity is generated in the current, traditional ways, it wreaks havoc on Mother Earth. These new ideas that are being generated with some cellular companies (and I’m sure all will follow suit at some point) are crucial to the necessary end result of using alternative energy wherever is humanly possible.
